What counts as an emergency?
If it is putting people at risk, damaging the property or stopping a business from running, call us. Some examples:
Drains
- Sewage coming up into the house, garden or yard
- A manhole or gully overflowing
- The only toilet in the house blocked
- A business that cannot use its toilets or kitchen

Pests
- A wasp nest by a doorway, in a busy area or where someone is allergic to stings
- Rats or mice in a kitchen, food business or care setting
- A pest problem that could close a food business or fail an inspection
- Birds trapped inside a building
Property
- An empty or probate property found open or broken into, that needs securing
- Damage at an empty property that is getting worse
- Urgent problems at a rented property that leave tenants without basic facilities

What to do while you wait
- Stay safeKeep children and pets away from wasp nests, sewage or damage. Do not try to remove a wasp nest yourself.
- Stop it getting worseFor drains, stop running water into them. For a nest, keep doors and windows near it shut.
- Take photosPhotos help us bring the right kit, and help with any insurance claim.

Gas, fire or danger to life
If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999. For fire or danger to life, call 999 first.
