About fleas

Fleas are small wingless insects that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. In UK homes the cat flea is by far the most common, and it is just as happy on dogs and people. Bites are itchy and some people and pets react badly to them, with irritation lasting for weeks.

Adult fleas are reddish-brown, about 2 to 3mm long, with strong back legs for jumping. Most of a flea population lives in the home as eggs, larvae and pupae in carpets, bedding and furniture, not on the pet. Pupae can lie dormant for months, which is why fleas often appear in a property that has been empty.

Signs of fleas

  • Itchy bites, usually around the ankles and lower legs
  • Pets scratching more than usual
  • Tiny dark specks in pet bedding that turn red on damp paper
  • Fleas jumping onto socks when you walk across a carpet
